Project title:The link between adult literacy and labour market participation and lifelong learning in Lithuania
Project duration: from 2020-04-01 to 2022-04-30
Project manager: doc. dr. Jolita Dudaitė

Summary: The aim of this project is to assess the level of adult literacy in Lithuania and its employability in the labour market. Literacy in this project is defined by the following components: reading literacy – as the ability to comprehend and make use of written text; mathematical literacy – as the ability to read, comprehend, interpret and make use of quantitative information; and problem solving through technology – as the ability to access, interpret, analyse and transform information found/obtained in digital media. These three components of literacy are among the most important in enabling a person to function fully in society and to establish himself or herself in the current labour market. The project will focus on the specificities of adult literacy in the present context, the importance of lifelong learning for literacy, the levels of adult literacy in Lithuania in the context of other countries, the literacy profiles according to the geographical locations of Lithuania, the characteristics of the clusters of low and high literacy adults, the relationship between the level of literacy and the placement in the labour market.

Result to be achieved: The project will analyse data from the OECD PIAAC (The Progamme for the InternationalAssessment of Adult Competencies) 2015 and the IEA TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 1995, 1999 and 2003. Lithuania participated in these studies. The results of the PIAAC International Adult Competences Survey will be linked to the results of the IEA TIMSS International Pupil Achievement Study in 1995, 1999 and 2003 to analyse how formerly literate pupils are now placed in the labour market.

The project is carried out under the Lithuanian Research Council (LRC) supported activity “Research Group Projects”.
