Summary: The project “System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting in Lithuania” (SEEAL) aims to support the implementation of the SEEA-EA framework in
Lithuania by developing ecosystem accounts for ecosystem extent, condition and services. The project idea comes as a response to the need for implementing the SEEA-EA by EU
Member States, betier integrating ecosystems’ role and value to society. The project will be developed in close collaboration with official authorities responsible for SEEA-EA in
Lithuania so that its results are relevant and contribute directly to its implementation. SSEAL will be divided into two work packages (WPs). WP1 aims to primarily, together with
relevant stakeholders, define three habitat types, time-frame of analysis and ecosystem services to be analysed. Indicators and methodologies will be chosen based on a literature
review, and the necessary data will be collected. Furthermore, a geodatabase will be developed to integrate the project’s results. WP2 focuses on data processing for each ecosystem
account by, in a stepwise approach, assessing and mapping ecosystem extent, condition, and services. Based on the project’s results, guidelines and recommendations will be
developed for policy and decision-makers contributing to the further implementation of SEEA-EA in Lithuania. SEEAL will provide new insights into the temporal dynamics of
ecosystem accounts and serve as the basis for the monetary valuation of ecosystem services. This information will also synergistically contribute to the implementation of other
environmental policies at national, European and international levels (e.g., Lithuanian National Environment Protection Strategy, European Green Deal, EU Biodiversity for 2030, UN
Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework).

The project is funded by the Lithuanian Research Council under the postdoctoral fellowship programme.
