Sept. 27th, 2018, Lithuania's Seimas approved Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Law Prof. Milda Vainiūtė to serve as Seimas Ombudsman. Prof. Vainiūtė, Lithuania's former Minister of Justice, will replace Raimondas Šukys, whose 5-year term ended earlier this year. Lithuania's Seimas Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis recommended Prof. Vainiūtė to the post. The Seimas Ombudsman is responsible for defending the protection of human rights and freedoms, investigating complaints regarding officials' actions and seeking to promote public dialogue in order that civil servants would better serve the people. Vainiūtė is a professor in the MRU School of Law's Institute of Public Law.
