Rector Monkevičius: Taking Into Account our Strengths, 3 Possible Proposals Submitted
Feb. 21st, 2017, in an open meeting of the Rectorate, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Rector Assoc. Prof. Algirdas Monkevičius, Vice-Rector for Research and Education Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, and Chancellor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saulius Spurga discussed the future of the University. At a packed auditorium, they presented MRU proposals, submitted to the Ministry of Education and Science at the behest of the Prime Minister, for optimizing the higher education network in Lithuania. MRU's proposal, included 3 possible scenarios. Rector Monkevičius explained what proposals were submitted to the Ministry of Education and Science. "Taking into account our strengths, we submitted three possible proposals for consideration," he said. The first is that MRU independently implements a strategy for developing social sciences geared towards certain areas. This by way of a network, uniting the Vilnius Didlaukis Academic Community and education institutions operating there. At the same time, creating a joint academic community infrastructure with the Vilnius College, the Vilnius Vocational Training Center, the Vilnius Baltupiai Gymnasium and other education insitutions in the Baltupiai area. The second and third options are the result of discussions with Vilnius University (VU) and the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) looking for a rational means of bringing more closely together the social sciences and technical potential. In addition, also for creating conditions for synergies and increasing the concentration of social sciences. These options provide the possible guidelines for the direction of the network, each of which has its strengths, weaknesses and risks. Now we await the decision of the Government. We are prepared to discuss specific conditions, both financial and legal, Rector Monkevičius said.
