The contribution of Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) to the third mission of the university - demonstrating social responsibility in caring for war refugees, mobilizing support for Ukrainian universities, civilians and soldiers, sharing space with the War Refugee School, fostering a culture of sustainability, mobilizing the local community and building partnerships in response to the societal challenges of war has been recognized by the international academic community.

The case of MRU's support to Ukraine was selected as one of the best examples of the Observatory's Magna Charta Universitatum research project "Responsible and Responsive Universities". The aim of the project is to build on the practices and experiences of MRU and the other six selected universities to develop a scientific concept for a third mission of the university and to share it with the universities in the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum network. The project covers the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of poverty and hunger reduction, quality education, reducing inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, peace, justice and strong institutions.

This project has a significant social impact by contributing to the empowerment of people, improving living conditions and quality of life, increasing educational opportunities, promoting the reduction of inequalities and inclusion, fostering sustainable development, promoting entrepreneurship and economic development, and encouraging community engagement and cooperation. (The good practice initiated by MRU strengthens universities and communities, not only in Lithuania, but also far beyond its borders.

Magna Charta Universitatum - a document signed in Bologna in 1988 by 388 university rectors from around the world, which defines the basic principles of university activity as academic freedom and autonomy, synergy between research and study, openness to research and debate. The Rector of MRU affirmed the University's support for the 2020 Magna Charta Universitatum and declared the University's commitment to the principles, values and responsibilities enshrined in the Charter, which reinforces the role of universities in preserving the environment and promoting peace, prosperity and education worldwide.  MRU is committed to all the principles of the Magna Charta Universitatum and to engaging the university community in the development of a more sustainable world.
