At the 16th General Conference of the International Association of Universities, which took place in Dublin on 25-28 October, Rector of Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė was elected a member of the Association’s Administrative Board for a second four-year term.

The main theme of the IAU 16th General Conference – relevance and value of universities to future society. During the conference, rectors discussed the lessons learnt while tackling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, elaborated on the role of higher education in achieving sustainable, fair, healthy and inclusive society. A new IAU strategic plan for 2022-2026 was adopted. Professor Andrew J Deeks (Vice Chancellor and President of Murdoch University) was appointed as IAU President and members of Administrative Board for the next four years elected.

In the plenary session, chaired by MRU Rector Prof. Dr. I. Žalėnienė, university leaders from different regions of the world shared the experiences of transformations taking place in the higher education sector, discussed the more efficient ways to use the newest technologies and methods for improving the study process and increase society’s digital literacy, considered conceptual questions regarding the education of competencies and skills needed for the changing labor market, and other issues relevant to academic community.

“By ensuring an inclusive, accessible and societal needs driven education, we must keep the imperative of leaving no one behind” – stated Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė when summarizing the discussions of conference participants.

IAU Administrative Board 2022-2026

The International Association of Universities (IAU), created under the auspices of UNESCO in 1950, unites almost 600 higher education institutions from more than 130 countries. MRU participates in IAU activities since 2004.
