Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) is now an official member of the United Nations (UN) initiative, United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI). MRU joins some 1400 institutions in 139 countries who are working with the UN to promote world peace, human rights, education, sustainable development and other goals.
As a UNAI member, MRU will be required to carry out at least one activity in support of UNAI and its 10 principles during a one-year period.
The United Nations Academic Impact is committed to supporting and advancing 10 basic principles:
1. Addressing Poverty - A commitment to addressing issues of poverty through education;
2. Capacity Building - A commitment to building capacity in higher education systems across the world;
3. Education for All - A commitment to education for all people regardless of gender, race, religion or ethnicity;
4. Global Citizenship - A commitment to encouraging global citizenship through education;
5. Access to Higher Education - A commitment to higher ed for every interested individual;
6. Human Rights - A commitment to human rights, among them freedom of inquiry, opinion, and speech;
7. Intercultural Dialogue - Commitment to intercultural dialogue and understanding, and “unlearning” of intolerance;
8. Peace and Conflict Resolution - A commitment to advancing peace and conflict resolution through education;
9. Sustainability - A commitment to promoting sustainability through education;
10. United Nations Charter - A commitment to the principles inherent in the UN Charter.
UNAI members are committed to developing and encouraging these principles within the University community and to incorporate the principles in appropriate activities and initiatives.
The adherence to UNAI principles is an important component of MRU’s membership because each year the activities will be reflected in the University’s Annual Report. The aim of the Report is to encourage students and academics to practically implement UN principles and to promulgate these to other UNAI members.
MRU was officially awarded a UNAI Certificate. It was signed by Ramu Damodaran, Deputy Director for Partnership and Public Engagement in the UN Department of Public Information’s Outreach Division and is chief of the United Nations Academic Impact initiative.
