A team from Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Law School recently participated in the PAX Moot Court competition, held from April 23 to April 26, 2024, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The team, consisting of students Artur Dubickij, Daryna Shykeriava, Soso Darchia, and Meda Baranauskaitė, was led by their coach, Associate Professor Dr. Remigijus Jokubauskas.
The PAX Moot is a specialized moot court competition focused on issues of Private International Law, which is held from 2012. Students taking part in this competition must apply EU law and other sources of private international law, interpret them and present a reasoned position.
The competition consists of two parts: written and oral. In the written part of the competition, the teams prepare two procedural documents (memorandums) – the claim and the statement of defence. During the oral part, each team has 40 minutes to present the arguments before judges assesing their performance, who are specialists experienced in the field of and professionals working within this field.
This year problems addressed in the PAX Moot required participants to deal with matters of international jurisdiction and applicable law in a complex factual situation involving parental responsibility, contractual relationships, validity of a contractual relationship entered into by a minor, termination of contractual relations, tort claims, and removal of online published content.
The MRU Law School team encountered teams from India, Spain, Bulgaria and Czech Republic. The team’s coach Remigijus Jokubauskas states that “the competition offered an invaluable opportunity for MRU students to gain valuable experience and build their network among other aspiring legal professionals from around the globe. The knowledge and skills acquired during the competition will undoubtedly benefit these students in their future careers”.
