MRU Grads Propelled Chess Team to 12th Place at Chess Olympiad in Baku

Sept. 1st-14th, 2016, at the 42nd Chess Olympiad, organised by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and comprising an Open and Women's tournament, MRU graduates Deimantė Daulytė and Salomėja Zaksaitė propelled the Lithuanian Chess Team to 12th place of 141 teams in Baku, Azerbaijan. That is the best result in the history of Lithuanian Chess. The World Chess Olympiad is one of the major sporting events which attracts about 3,000 athletes and officials from more than 150 countries. Daulytė, the Lithuanian Team leader, told the daily online news portal 15.min Sept. 18th that the outcome surpassed expectations. International Master Daulytė collected 8 of 10 points and took 3rd place. "We all thought that placing in the top 20 would be a great result," she said excited about the final result. The Lithuanian Chess Team was headed by MRU coach master Vaidas Sakalauskas.
