March 10th, 2015, Iceland's Presdent Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Ukraine's Ambassador Valery Zhovtenko and other guests attended the 25th anniversary of Lithuania's Restoration of Independence event held on campus.

Seimas parliament member Vydas Gedvilas, Lithuania's former parliament member, Premier Gediminas Vagnorius, a member of Mykolas Romeris University's (MRU) Council were at the festivities along with numerous professors, academics, students and staff.

Lithuanian opera singer Virgilijus Noreika sang the national anthem. MRU's Choir sang Iceland's national anthem. President Grimsson complimented the MRU Choir on the rendition saying the anthem is difficult to perform.

March 11th, Lithuania celebrates the Restoration of Independence as the Act Re-establishing the State of Lithuania was adopted on March 11th, 1990.

February 11, 1991, Iceland was the first country to recognize Lithuania's Restoration of Independence. There is a street in the center of Vilnius, Islandijos gatvė, named in honour of Iceland to mark this historic event.

President Grimsson said it was "a monumental decision" for Iceland 25 years ago to recognize Lithuania's Independence.

Not every country in Europe was in favour of our decision, he said. "Most of them were either against or hesitant. It was not a decision taken by us because it was popular. It was taken because it was morally right," President Grimsson said.

He emphasized that in the modern world "it is important that small countries have the courage and the will to pave the way to new achievements..."

Aside from MRU's Choir, MRU "Skalsa" folk dancers performed during the event.
