May 9th, 2018, on Europe Day, Ghent University Prof. Peter van Elsuwege will present a lecture in English, "The Rule of Law Crisis in the European Union: What Role for the EU Court of Justice?"
The lecture is presented at a time when the topic is relevant. Recently, the European University described it as the most existential challenge to the European Union (EU). As two EU countries, Poland and Hungary, are in a situation when breaches of the principle of the Rule of Law have become systemic, yet there are signs that the problem might also spread to other Member States.
The lecture will focus on the role of the EU Court of Justice in addressing this crisis.
Prof. Elsuwege is co-Director of the Ghent European Law Institute (GELI). He has worked at this institute since 2001.
He became a professor in 2010. His doctoral dissertation, defended at Ghent university in 2007, analyzes the accession of the Baltic States to the European Union. His major research interest is the law of EU external relations, with a particular emphasis on the relations between the EU and its east European neighbours.
At the University of Ghent he teaches courses on EU law and the autonomy of the EU legal order. Moreover, he is the academic coordinator of a Jean Monnet module on the legal aspects of EU external relations.
He also teaches at the College of Europe (Natolin campus) and has been a visiting professor at the University of Tartu as well as Russia’s MGIMO. Professor Elsuwege holds Master Degrees in European Law and International relations and has a PhD in law.
