May 11th, 2023, 9.10. the Emergency Help line 112 received information that there is a fire at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) located at Ateities str. 20, Vilnius.
Luckily, this was only an evacuation exercise. It's purpose was to practically carry out the evacuation of students and staff from University buildings. The fire drill was also held in order to teach the university community how to behave in the event of a fire or other emergency. During the fire drill, fake smoke was released in MRU's Central building and on the 4th floor, near the Dean's Office.
When the fire alarm was triggered, all University staff inside the building were asked to leave the university premises through designated evacuation exits. The whole MRU community gathered in a safe, marked place - outside near the Sports Field.
The Vilnius Fire and Rescue Department, which arrived at the "burning building," were informed that "advertising boards" at the MRU central entrance and in the building, where the MRU faculty deans are located, - on the 4th floor, were on fire. Firefighters were also informed that there were persons trapped on the fifth floor of the building, who can't come out due to the smoke.
Firefighters searched for people and extinguished the fire.
After the evacuation, a discussion of the fire drill and actions was undertaken. There was an evaluation as to how prepared the University community is in the event of a fire.
This fire drill attracted a lot of interest from the Didlaukis academic community. It is expected that the fire drill will be useful not only for Mykolas Romeris University, but also for the entire academic community, once again reminding everyone of the need to adhere to safety standards and appropriate actions during evacuation.
