On the occasion of the first anniversary of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Rector and the Chairperson of the Board of Rectors of the ERUA Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire ERUA community, emphasizing the alliance’s transformative role for Europe and the future of higher education. The celebration took place during ERUA Day at Paris 8 University in France, where the Rector participated in discussions addressing the strategic goals and development plans of the alliance.
In her address to the ERUA community, Prof. Dr. Žalėnienė highlighted the significance of European university alliances, recalling French President Emmanuel Macron’s 2017 Sorbonne speech, which proposed the idea of European Universities as a transformative force.
"Europe is like a symphony orchestra, diverse in its instruments and traditions, yet united in creating harmony. What keeps this orchestra in tune? Shared values and commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. This is where the European University Alliances like ERUA play an important role," she noted.
Prof. Dr. Žalėnienė emphasized that ERUA is not just another EU project: "We are an alliance—a community united by shared purpose and vision, shared values, governance, rights, and responsibilities. Together, we are building a sustainable, long-term strategy for transformative transnational education, research, and community engagement".
During her visit to Paris, the Rector took part in strategic meetings focusing on topics such as the development of a European degree, fostering interdisciplinary research clusters, and strengthening collaboration with other European university alliances. Additionally, discussions covered ERUA's contributions to lifelong learning through microcredentials and flexible learning paths, ensuring that education remains accessible, personalized, and relevant to learners of all ages and backgrounds.
The first ERUA anniversary celebration at Paris 8 University brought together academics, students, and administrators from various European countries to reflect on the achievements of the past year and plan future activities.
Prof. Dr. Žalėnienė invited the entire ERUA community to continue this meaningful journey: "As we celebrate this first year, let us remember: we are not just building for today, but for the future. We are Alliance, We are ERUA".
