Czech Erasmus Students Miss Mountains, Home-Cooked Food

Czech Erasmus students, Aneta Pradkova and Klara Janikova from Brno's Masaryk University, arrived a few days ago for their Erasmus semester at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU). They say they miss the mountains and are surprised that Lithuania is such a flat country. "I had a friend here who recommended it to me," said Law student Klara Janikova. I had applied to universities in Norway and another in England, and I ended up here, she said. So far, so good. But, she says that she already misses her mother's home-cooked food. Earlier this week, she was in the Vilnius Old Town at a restaurant that served a great meal, similar to some Czech cuisine. Hailing from the famous Moravian wine region, she said that she misses "our wine." Preparing for her Erasmus semester in Vilnius, she took a Basic Lithuanian course at the Masaryk University. There were about 10 students and I learned to introduce myself and ask for directions, she said. She has also signed up for the Lithuanian course here at MRU. Janikova said from what she has seen of the MRU auditoriums and lecture halls, they are clean and very modern. One of the lecture rooms, she said reminded her of the parliament due to its layout. Fellow student Aneta Pradkova, a journalism student working towards her Master's Degree, said she may write about her experiences in Lithuania for newspapers in the Czech Republic. "I write all the time for some newspapers," said the student, who is the Editor of the magazine, "Atrium" at her Faculty in Masaryk University. Most surprising is how flat Lithuania is, said Pradkova who comes from Novy Jičin, not far from the Beskydy Mountains. "At the end of my time here, I would be obsessed to go somewhere up. I will be looking forward to go to the mountains," she said. But for now, the two students are ready to explore the Lithuanian castle town of Trakai and the spa resort town of Druskininkai. Visits to the two towns are part of Welcome Week events for international students at MRU.
