On March 13, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) alumni and the academic community gathered for a special event titled "MRU 35: Alumni. University. Future." at the Museum of Applied Art and Design. This year, it became a double celebration—marking not only the traditional gathering on March 11 but also the 35th anniversary of the University.
MRU Rector Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, welcoming the attendees, emphasized the importance of community unity and invited everyone to continue this tradition. She expressed joy that, over the past 35 years, the University has grown not only as an academic center but also as a strong community where new ideas are born, and future professionals are nurtured. She also celebrated that, starting this fall, alumni from the newly established Sūduvos Academy would join MRU's alumni network, successfully integrating into the University community. She emphasized that the University remains a place where students can grow, develop, and acquire the competencies needed for today's society.
During the event, alumni from different generations, faculty members, deans, vice-rectors, the rector, and administrative staff celebrated MRU’s anniversary by sharing memories from their student years, discussing how the University has evolved over the years, and reflecting on the future they envision for it.
"I would love and dream that we could all gather again in 35 years to celebrate the 70th anniversary of a free and independent Lithuania, with a strong community and a thriving University," said MRU Law School alumnus and University Council member Rytis Valūnas.
This year, a new tradition was also started—to honor distinguished alumni for their outstanding achievements and contributions to strengthening the MRU brand. Those whose work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the University's growth and increased recognition were recognized on this occasion. After the awards ceremony, guests participated in a discussion moderated by Vice-Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saulius Spurga.
The discussion featured notable MRU alumni: Linas Pernavas, Director of the Special Investigation Service of Lithuania; Rytis Valūnas, University Council member; cybersecurity expert Mindaugas Matulionis; lecturer at the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, and marketing club member Saulius Kromalcas; and education and political figure, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius District Municipality Edita Tamošiūnaitė. They shared memories of their student years, emphasized the importance of higher education in their professional journeys, and discussed how MRU helps shape the skills and competencies of future professionals, needed both in today's job market and for addressing future challenges.
Linas Pernavas, MRU alumnus from the Academy of Public Security and Director of the Special Investigation Service of Lithuania, highlighted the need for qualified officers in Lithuania today.
"Just recently, after three years of intensive work, we signed an agreement with Mykolas Romeris University and other law enforcement institutions. Therefore, I wish the University success in launching National Security studies, which will prepare future officers—the creators of Lithuania's future and colleagues in our institutions," he said.
At the end of the evening, participants enjoyed a cozy atmosphere and a musical performance by composer and singer Raminta Naujanytė-Bjellė.
The MRU community is pleased that the University remains an essential part of alumni's lives. Such meetings not only revive memories but also open up new opportunities for collaboration. It is hoped that this tradition will continue, strengthening the MRU network worldwide.
