May 25th, 2023, MRU Environmental Management LAB Head Prof. Paulo Pereira will take part in a European Diplomacy Roundtable in Chișinău, Moldova.

Prof. Pereira and academics will discuss the impact of the War in Ukraine on the Environment in the Black Sea region.

The Black Sea region includes the following countries: Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, Sakartvelo, and Ukraine.

According to information provided by the organizers of the event, in Moldova the weather has become warmer in the last decades. In Romania, the weather has become more extreme. In Georgia, disasters impacted by climate changes could total about $12-billion over the next decades.

When the War began last February, the conflicts posed economic and social problems heavily impacting the environment there. Recent data show that military operation emissions during the war, are only known in part. No one is taking responsibility for this.

The aim of the roundtable is to discuss the main impacts of the war in Ukraine on soil, water and air in the Black Sea area and propose specific solutions to offset these problems.

Academics from Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine and Lithuania will sit down to discuss the issues in Moldova.

It is a hybrid event with some participants taking part online.
