Employability in Lithuania

STUDYING IN LITHUANIA

EU students

Students from EU or European Free Trade Association do not need a visa to enter the Republic of Lithuania. They can come and stay in Lithuania for 3 months and after that at the local Migration Department they must apply for the Certificate signifying their right to reside in the Republic of Lithuania (Certificate of Temporary Residence).

NON-EU students

If you are a student from non-EU country and you want to stay in Lithuania for no longer than 1 year, you can get a National Visa. If you intend to stay longer than 1 year, you should apply for a Temporary Residence Permit.

WORK DURING STUDIES

EU students

For EU citizens, the process of employment in Lithuania is quite simple. They do not need any additional document and working hours are not limited.

NON-EU students

Non-EU undergraduate (bachelor) students willing to work during their studies in the Republic of Lithuania must obtain a Temporary Residence Permit and then they can work up to 20 hours per week during their studies at the Mykolas Romeris University.

However, they can work full-time (40 hours per week) under the following exceptions:

  • During the summer holidays for time determined by higher education institution
  • Work carried out as a part of an internship
  • During the 3 months after graduation (a Temporary Residence Permit for studies is still valid for 3 months after actual end of studies).

Non-EU Master’s and PhD students who have a Temporary Residence Permit for studies can work full-time during their studies. No additional work permits are required.

WORK AFTER STUDIES

NON-EU students

After graduation, citizens from non-EU countries can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit for 12 additional months for a job search and self-employment purposes. After 12 months, the graduate has to apply for the renewal of the temporary residence permit for work. It has to be done at least 2 months in advance. The application to change a temporary residence permit must be submitted, along with supporting documents.

From the 1st of January 2021, graduates can do this at the Migration Department’s office (having booked an appointment in advance), or in an eldership or municipality within 1 month from the date of collection of the issued residence permit, but not earlier than 4 months.

You can find more information on the website of the Migration Department’s office.

Migration information centre (MIC) “I Choose Lithuania” consults international students on questions related to legal stay in Lithuania, social guarantees, health care, work and employment free of charge. Consultations in the centre are in Lithuanian, English and German languages.
