WISE Project Team Hosted Conferences, Summer School & More

MRU academics have been involved in the project, Europe After World War II: Multidimensional Effects of Integration as a Guarantee for State and Human Security (WISE), funded with the support of the European Union (EU) under the Programme, "Europe for Citizens." The Goal: Reaffirming the memory and lessons of the Second World War given its relevance for European integration and security today. Mission Statement: the Second World War was such a momentous turning point in understanding Europe today that it is fundamental that its memories and lessons are not lost and reiterated for the benefits of new generations. Method: bringing academics, high school children and other groups together through a series of EU funded events to explore the nexus between the Second World War and today. Five events have been carried out within this project: Event 1. International conference: Past and future issues and challenges of prevention of international crimes and rise of intolerance Participation: The event involved 80 citizens, including 67 participants from the city of Vilnius (Lithuania), 2 participants from the city of Naples (Italy), 3 participants from the city of Rouen (France), 2 participants from the city of Giessen (Germany), 2 participants from the city of London (United Kingdom) 3 participants from the cities of Poznan and Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Prague (the Check Republic). Location / Dates: The event took place in Vilnius (Lithuania), from 10/12/2015 to 11/12/2015 Short description: The aim of the event was to analyze contemporary themes from the perspective or context of the Second World War in order to assess if the lessons learned from the War have been effective, and to identify and build upon necessary strengths and address weaknesses for future generations. Event 2: European schools’ team competition “U&WWII” Participation: The event involved 56 citizens, including 25 participants from the cities of Vilnius, Marijampolė, Garliava, Panevėžys, Klaipėdą (Lithuania), 2 participants from the city of Prague (the Check Republic), 1 participant from the city of London (United Kingdom), 17 participants from the cities of Naples, Cortona, Rimini (Italy), 8 participants from the cities of Poznan and Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participants from the city of Giessen (Germany), 2 participants from the city of Rouen (France). Location / Dates: The qualifying round lasted from 31/01/2016 until 5/4/2016. The final took place in Oswiecim (Oswiecim, Poland), from 20/04/2016 to 23/04/2016. Short description: The aim of the event was to preserve the memories and lessons of the Second World War amongst younger generations. Event 3. International conference: Reimagining the EU: The Contemporary Value(s) of the EU Participation: The event involved 52 citizens, including 39 participants from the city of Prague (the Czech Republic), 2 participants from the city of Giessen (Germany), 1 participant from Rouen (France), 1 participant from the city of London (United Kingdom), 3 participants from Poznan and Wroclaw (Poland), 5 participants from Vilnius (Lithuania), 2 participants from Napoli (Italy). Location / Dates: The event took place in Prague (the Czech Republic), from 13/10/2016 to 14/10/2016. Short description: The aim of the international conference was to interpret and look at the use of key policy principles, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law in a range of different practical spheres, particularly with a view to considering their conduciveness to a society that is tolerant and sustainable. Event 4. International Human Rights Summer School Participation: The event involved 43 citizens, including 11 participants from the city of Vilnius (Lithuania), 8 participants from the city of Naples (Italy), 5 participants from the city of Rouen (France), 1 participant from the city of Giessen (Germany), 5 participants from the city of London (United Kingdom) 8 participants from the cities of Poznan and Wroclaw (Poland), 5 participants from the city of Prague (the Check Republic). Location / Dates: The event took place in Vilnius (Lithuania), from 19/7/2016 to 27/7/2016 Short description: The aim of the event was is to explore the main precepts and tenets about the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms. Event 5. International Tolerance Network Participation: To date the network involves 40 citizens, including 24 participants from the city of Vilnius (Lithuania), 4 participants from the city of Naples (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Rouen (France), 2 participants from the city of Giessen and Hannover (Germany), 1 participant from the city of London (United Kingdom), 7 participants from the cities of Poznan and Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Prague (the Check Republic). Location / Dates: The Network was opened for membership in Poznan (Poland) on 4/10/2015. Short description: The aim of the Network is to incentivize, conduct and support cross-country and inter-disciplinary academic activity on the historical and contemporary relevance of conflict on Europe and the values of civil society today. The WISE project team is presenting WISE project results! 28 Feb 2017 at room 201 LAB building. More about the project: www.europeanwise.eu The presentation will be followed by a discussion on the importance of remembrance and European values with Seimas member Gabrielius Lansbergis, Head of the Homeland Union, a former member of the European Parliament, and an expert in history and diplomacy.
